Last Wednesday, February 26, our amazing self-advocates from The Arc ADventurers in Leadership went to our state’s capitol for IDD Awareness Day! It was an amazing experience for our gang from start to finish. We started with a private tour of the capitol, including a walk around the dome at the top of the building…so many stairs. The view from up there is unbelievable. Next we helped/volunteered at The Alliance IDD Awareness Day Luncheon. Our group helped setup the luncheon and then ran the check-in table for everyone who was registered. We welcomed the hundreds of participants, giving each of them the opportunity to interact with a person with a disability. As the luncheon started, speakers from legislators, to self-advocates, to solution creators spoke and inspired the room. As our group said goodbye to those who attended, we got a feeling that everyone felt this day was a success in appreciating people with IDD, and carried a very positive message. Being a part of this day showed us a great deal about the capitol, the legislation and direct care providers, which highlighted how important our community is!
